Explaining Multiple Intelligences

Multiple intelligences theory is a core tenet of our educational services and school staff training. Developed by psychologist Howard Gardner, this theory of human intelligence suggests there are at least seven ways of perceiving and understanding the world.
Gardner labels each of these as a distinct “intelligence” – a set of skills that enables individuals to identify and resolve genuine problems that they face. He defines an intelligence as a group of abilities that:
  • Have Plausible Roots in Evolutionary History
  • Have a Distinct Role in the Stages of Human Development
  • Are Somewhat Autonomous from Other Human Capacities
  • Have a Core Set of Information-Processing Operations

The Seven Intelligences

While not an exhaustive list, Gardner’s identifiable categories of learning are as follows:
Body-Kinaesthetic
The Wisdom of the Body and the Ability to Control Physical Motion
Verbal-Linguistic
The Ability to Use Words and Language
Logical-Mathematical
The Capacity for Inductive and Deductive Thinking and Reasoning, as well as the Use of Numbers and the Recognition of Abstract Patterns
Visual-Spatial
The Ability to Visualise Objects and Spatial Dimensions and Create Internal Images and Pictures
Intrapersonal
The Spiritual, Inner States of Being, Self-Reflection, and Awareness
Musical-Rhythmic
The Ability to Recognise Tonal Patterns and Sounds, as well as a Sensitivity to Rhythms and Beats
Interpersonal
The Capacity for Person-to-Person Communications and Relationships
